Richard Smith has worked in the leather and footwear sector since 1995 as Commercial Manager of Leather International magazine and is currently responsible for the marketing of the international leather fairs of APLF in Latin America. In addition, he is a contributor and investigator on the leather, footwear and related industries concentrating on both Asia and Latin America, with the objective of portraying this industrial sector in the wider context of macroeconomic forces, so as to indicate “where the industry as a whole is headed”.
The campaign to discredit leather as a viable material is being run globally by well-funded NGO’s with specific agendas.
Day 2 at APLF was almost a continuation of Day 1 - but not quite as tanners had had time to reflect a little after the fast and furious start to the fair on Wednesday. Enthusiasm and throngs of visitors do not make sales or sign contracts.
Before the fair started there was some reticence due to trade sanctions being imposed unilaterally by the US and threats by both China and Europe to retaliate.
